The UX & Web Design team at HardScrabble is collaborating with the Wintergreen Community Arts Center to offer KidzCode beginning September 17, 2018.
KidzCode introduces children to coding fun! We explore computer programming concepts with a different theme each week. Lessons include plugged and unplugged activities that reinforce abstract coding concepts.
Wintergreen Arts Center was recently awarded $25,000 by MMG Insurance Company, headquartered in Presque Isle, “to purchase technology tools including laptops, cameras, a scanner, software, and accessories to engage students in the digital artistic process.”
MMG published the following statement: “The goal of this collaboration between MMG and Wintergreen is to promote technological literacy in Aroostook County by offering fun, technology-based, creative programming that leads to positive self-expression and lifelong learning.”
The Star Herald’s Anthony Brino wrote, “Wintergreen executive director Dottie Hutchins said the new technology opens new opportunities for the nonprofit community arts center. The cameras, laptops and projector can be used for new classes in visual arts, design and software coding, while the digital scanner will allow Wintergreen to make digital copies of traditional paintings and drawings.”
“It adds amazing things to the kids who are already coming and will bring a whole new demographic into Wintergreen,” Hutchins said.
Additionally, KidzCode/Scratch will be offered by HardScrabble Solutions Founder, Lillie Lavado, through the SAD1 Adult & Community Education department beginning October 2, 2018. This KidzCode series will primarily use Massachusetts Institute of Technology drag-and-drop programming software. Students in grades 4-6 are welcome to enroll for the eight-week session. Only $45!
The HardScrabble team is offering several other computer technology courses through SAD1 this Fall. The roster includes: SmartPhone Basics, Computer Basics, Facebook for Fun, Facebook for Business, and Microsoft Office.
KidzCode Afterschool Arts at Wintergreen follows a different schedule. Grades K-3 meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm; Grades 4-8 meet Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Only $50 per 6-Week Session!
